Special Education Teacher, High School (potential for full-time role after first year)

Kathryn Grace School is seeking a passionate and experienced Special Education Teacher to join our high school program, which serves students with Down Syndrome and other intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). This part-time position offers the unique opportunity to shape an inclusive, life-ready curriculum grounded in dignity, engagement, and individualized growth. A transition to full-time may be available after the first year based on program needs and performance.

About the Role

The Special Education Teacher will provide direct instruction to high school-aged students with moderate to significant disabilities. Instruction will focus on functional academics, communication development, social-emotional learning, adaptive behavior, and pre-vocational/life skills. The teacher will develop and implement individualized accommodation plans aligned with MSDE standards and student-specific goals, using evidence-based practices such as differentiated instruction, task analysis, visual supports, and assistive technology.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver daily lessons in reading, math, science, social studies, and life skills using adapted and modified curriculua.
  • Collaborate with related service providers (e.g., OT, SLP, PT) to ensure integrated service delivery.
  • Monitor and document student progress toward Alternative Program (AP) goals and objectives.
  • Support transition planning for students preparing for graduation, employment, or community integration.
  • Maintain compliance with MSDE regulations regarding AP implementation, data tracking, and record keeping.
  • Foster a safe, inclusive, and structured classroom environment that encourages independence, engagement, and meaningful participation.
  • Partner closely with families, paraprofessionals, and the wider school team to ensure coordinated, individualized support for each student.

Qualifications

  • Valid Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) certification in Special Education (grades 6–adult).
  • Bachelor’s degree in Special Education required; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Minimum of three years of relevant teaching experience, ideally with students with moderate-to-significant disabilities.
